646f9e108c Brian McLean is a ruthless bush-pilot in Canada. He offers some other pilots an opportunity of earning a lot of money, but he marries the girl-friend of one of them. After listening to Churchill's famous "Blood, Sweat and tears" radio address he and some other pilots decide to join the RCAF - and his superior is always the pilot who's girlfriend he has married. Due to this and the fact, that McLean doesn't like to obey he gets troubles.
Brian MacLean is a bush pilot in the Canadian north and he's making a nasty reputation for himself. He's undercutting his fellow bush pilots' prices and seeks out jobs that have already been promised to others. He even steals rival Johnny Dutton's fiancée Emily Foster to keep him from marrying her. After a short-lived honeymoon in Ottawa, MacLean decides to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Like many others, he's itching to get to Europe where World War II is raging but Mac Lean has some difficulty adapting to the RCAF way of flying and giving up his fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants approach. After causing a death, he is expelled from the Air Force but using an old friend's identity, takes a on a joba civilian pilot where he still hopes to get in on the action.
. . . his characters always get second and tenth chances, no matter how many "friendly fire" deaths they cause. Moreover, America's propagandists made sure that all of Cagney's war-time sinners became saints by the final credits to offset all the collateral damage and havoc they'd wreaked in their wakes. In THE FIGHTING 69th, Cagney's role is to portray a WWI dough-boy so "yellow" that scores of his comrades and company's officers are needlessly killed in multiple outrages on the Western Front (including the "Trees" poet, Sgt. Joyce Kilmer). Whenever this wayward Yank is given an order, he behavesif they're having an "Opposite Day" to amuse him. But on the eve of his long-overdue execution, a German artillery shell springs him from his cell, whereupon he single-handedly breaks up a Hun counter-attack, dying a brave hero in the process. This plot went over so well that it gets embedded just a few years later into this WWII yarn, CAPTAINS OF THE CLOUDS. This time Cagney's "Brian" is briefly a RCAF officer, but Brian's justloathe to follow ordersCagney's WWI dough-boy. Brian succeeds in killing off about half his friends. But with his sixth chance, he's in a position to put an end to it when the Germans begin to pick off the other half. If Cagney was a YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, think how that makes two-time losers Germany feel!
A number of sharp observations have already been made of this movie. Certainly, there do appear to have been two pictures which have been sliced in two and bonded together. I can't help wondering where the other film is - ie. the film which started outa wartime RCAF flagwaver and endsa mountains-and- lakes set movie with the love interest triangle, plus old Alan Hale.<br/><br/>As with so many old films, historical interest alone makes the picture worth seeing again and again; for its day, marks: 6.5 or 7 out of 10.<br/><br/>Certainly, there are one or two pretty corny scenes and fancy Michael Curtiz letting Cagney and D. Morgan get away with surely the least convincing fight ever filmed. He must have taken an early lunch that day.
